Unburden your house of Halloween and holiday candy

As a holistic health practitioner, I hate that sugar-ladened candy is such a huge part of Halloween and the holidays.

Sugar “in general” or rather in the type that is in abundance in our culture today is refined white sugar made from genetically modified sugar beets so it is much more toxic and problematic to your body.  But, organic white sugar, sugar “in the raw”, organic brown sugar, etc. is still sugar and still does all of the things that I mentioned above just with fewer toxic by-products and chemicals for your body to detox from. 


If you do consume sugars, stick with natural forms like:

  • fruit (dates, figs, currants, prunes, and raisins have high concentrations of sugar)
  • honey
  • maple syrup
  • coconut nectar
  • blackstrap molasses
  • stevia
  • coconut sugar
  • monk fruit 

Sugar paralyzes your immune system for up to 12 hours.

Sugar makes you fat and disrupts your hormone balance.

Sugar reduces the function of your gut and reduces your gut permeability opening you up to autoimmune problems, mental issues like anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, etc.

Sugar also feeds yeast/fungus/Candida overgrowth which causes a whole myriad of mental and physical symptoms.

Sugar spikes inflammation causing joint pain, muscle aches and all sorts of painful issues.

And sugar is terribly addicting!  Sugar is legal-crack as far as your brain is concerned especially in large quantities and when consumed frequently of course.  So stick to the 4th crack commandment and don’t get high on your own supply. 

Kids are super sensitive to the effects of sugar because their metabolisms are so fast and they are so small.  Giving them sugar is like adding kerosene to a bonfire that’s already blazing, so be mindful if their behavior changes or they get sick over the Halloween/holiday seasons with all that sugar consumption. 

I am a former sugar addict so I get it, I truly do. Be strong and don’t get sucked into doing what everyone else does if you want to live and feel like no one else does. 

How to get rid of all the candy

  • Make a plan with your kid’s involvement to minimize how much stays in your home and for how long (if at all) then make and stick to a rule of 1-2 pieces a day but not as a reward as food should not ever be used to change behavior 
  • Throw away half, it’s garbage junk food with zero nutritional value
  • Buy it from your kids and then do away with it
  • Give it away at work and/or send it with your spouse to take to his/her work
  • Send it to Operation Gratitude and they will distribute it to our troops and first responders in care packages
  • Fill a pinata that is sure to be tough to break open one day…maybe
  • Use it for holiday decorating and crafts
  • Use it for science experiments…ever microwaved a marshmallow peep?
  • Candy bomb a parking lot!
  • Give it to your enemies…just kidding…sort of 🙂
  • If you don’t have self-control, get rid of it…..it will not serve you well
